Black steel compression springs from AK Interactive, 1.5mm in diameter, for modeling pipes and hoses.

A flexible hose is one of the hardest things to model convincingly from plastic rod or putty, because the real thing is ribbed along its whole length. A fine spring already has those ribs. Cut a length, bend it to the run you need and glue it in place, and it reads as a braided or reinforced hose: fuel and hydraulic lines, air hoses on engines, cables on vehicles and machinery.

These are high quality steel springs in a black finish, so they look right with little or no painting. The pack holds two springs, each 15cm long. To hold a curved shape, AK recommends running a wire through the middle of the spring before bending it. AK makes the same springs in other diameters and in silver.
