The American GI is not one colour, he is a layered kit list. The M-42 jacket ran to a mustard ochre khaki, the M-43 that replaced it was a distinctly greener olive, and underneath and around both sat olive drab trousers, canvas webbing, leggings and a leather belt and boots. That mismatch is what makes a well painted US infantryman read as a real soldier rather than a toy, and it is why the six tones here are chosen as a group: an olive base, the two jacket colours, field drab and canvas tone for the webbing and gaiters, and a red brown for the leather. Paint the layers in different tones and the figure gains depth before you have touched a highlight.
