Milliput 101: Gap-Filling and Simple Sculpting for Cleaner Miniatures

You glued your miniature together and there's an ugly seam running right across its chest, or a gap where the arm meets the torso. Every hobbyist hits this on day one. The classic, cheap, almost magical fix is Milliput — a two-part epoxy putty that fills gaps, smooths joins and even lets you sculpt simple details. A single pack lasts months.

How to use it

Cut equal amounts from each of the two bars and knead them together until the colour is completely uniform — that mixing is what activates the putty. Press it into the gap with a damp tool or fingertip (water stops it sticking to you), smooth the surface, and leave it to cure rock-hard over a few hours. Once set, it sands, drills and paints exactly like the rest of the model.

Pro tips

Keep a pot of water handy — a wet tool gives a glass-smooth finish and stops the putty dragging. Work in small amounts; a little goes a long way, and unused putty hardens whether you use it or not. And don't rush the cure: give it a few hours before sanding, or it'll gum up your files.
