Warmachine MKIV: A Beginner's Guide to Starting Your First Army

Warmachine MKIV Cygnar battlegroup miniatures

Warmachine MKIV is one of the most tactically rewarding miniatures games on the table today, but its range of factions and box types can feel overwhelming when you're starting out. This guide breaks down exactly what you need to begin.

Step 1: Pick a faction that fits your playstyle

Each Warmachine MKIV army has a distinct feel. Cygnar brings storm-powered warjacks and ranged firepower. Khador fields heavy, durable armour and the industrial might of the Motherland. Cryx leans into necromechanical horror and attrition, while newer forces like Dusk, Khymaera, and the Southern Kriels offer fresh mechanics. Browse the full range in our Warmachine collection to see what speaks to you.

Step 2: Start with a Battlegroup Box

A Battlegroup Box is the intended entry point for any faction. It contains a Warcaster and a small group of warjacks — enough to learn the core rules and the all-important focus mechanic. From there, a Command Starter or Core Expansion grows your force into a full army.

Step 3: Learn the rules (they're free)

Warmachine MKIV rules and unit stats live in the official Warmachine App, so you don't need to buy a rulebook to play. Download it, build a list around your battlegroup, and you're ready for your first game.

Step 4: Don't forget paint and glue

MKIV models are supplied unpainted and require assembly. A starter paint set and plastic glue will get you from box to battlefield — see our paint & hobby supplies for everything you need.
